2Disappointed  Mar 12, 2010 By Fred Stiers
I'm not a professional plumber but a do it yourselfer. It's my opinion that the gentlemen that wrote this book is a professional book writer rather than someone that is knowlegable on the subject or ever plumbed a house. I purchased the book to understand the problems associated with galvonic corrision (a problem associated with dissimilar metals being ajoined). The book never addressed the consequences that can occur when copper/brass and galvanized/iron pipe are connected. There are solutions to this problem but he never addresses it. Do yourself a favor and do an internet search concerning galvonic corrosion before installing a new hot water heater and you'll get the information that was omitted from this book. It'll save you a ton of money later on and alot of heartache.

His profile states that he is also a master electrician and publishes books on that subject. Hope those books are better than this one.

5Does what it set out to do  Oct 11, 2011 By R. JORDAN
I am a remodeler and have done a lot of plumbing in houses I have lived in. I have done a fair amount of plumbing in houses I have remodeled, when the job only took a couple hours. Beyond that I would hire a licensed plumber for liability reasons. When I have a plumber on the job, I usually ask questions and think I am fairly knowledgeable about residential plumbing. I saw this book in a big box store, but didn't have time to look through it. I looked at the reviews on Amazon and was quite surprised.

I believe this book was aimed at the average home handyman. From some of the reviews, I would gather "handy" was not an attribute of the reviewers. It would be impossible to show how to fix all of the thousands of toilets and faucets made over the years. As far as having to buy thousands of dollars of tools to do the plumbing, I have but a small toolbox of tools I consider plumbing only tools. Four or five hundred dollars at most.

I found the book fairly complete as to how to join the various types of pipe in use today. The pictures were helpful in understanding what he was writing about. I feel this should prove to be a good reference for the typical projects most homeowners would encounter. I won't be buying the book as I already knew most of what he covered. BTW, I took the book out of the library and read the entire book.

2Strongly suggest you read this review before you decide to purchase this nice looking book.  May 29, 2011 By D. Blankenship
If you live in a house in this country, you must deal with plumbing issues from time to time. This is an absolute fact of life. Furthermore, the older your house, the more issues you will be faced with. A second fact of life is that plumbers are extremely expensive. The reason for this is that plumbing is not easy. It takes a tremendous amount of skill, education and experience to be any good at it. Plumbing, in general is not something a good old boy with a wrench, screwdriver and good intentions can pull off with any degree of success.

Now I, in general, come from the Red Green School of plumbing. If it cannot be fixed with five or six rolls of duct tape, then I call a professional...a licensed, certified professional with a good local reputation.

The book being reviewed there is a pretty book. The photographs in it are magnificent. The text is quite readable and informative...as far as it goes. There are relatively miner jobs addressed in this book, such as replacing and installing a snap-on toilet seat that are just fine and dandy.

We all have unique lives and situations which entail different needs. Briefly, my particular situation is this...We live in a home which was built some 35 odd years ago and has had one major edition and a couple of minor ones. We have over the years bought and renovated old homes. We are about to buy a very old farm house (well over one hundred years old) located next door and plan to renovate it also. With these old homes I can, despite being mechanically challenged and a complete klutz when it comes to tools, manage most structural problems, cosmetic projects and to a certain extent, general maintenance; granted, I get much help and advice from friends and family. While inept, I am persistent if nothing else, and simply do a job over and over again until I get it right...hey, it is what I do and it works for me.

During my inspections of this old place it was quite apparent that the plumbing and electrical work was designed and installed by Rube Goldberg...after he had swallowed a tab of acid. Wow, what a nightmare. Both systems, plumbing and electrical will have to be completely removed and replaced. I have absolutely no intention (as in the past) of doing this myself...I will call in professionals despite the cost.

Anyway, as to this book: I am sorry to report to you that there are major flaws and short comings found between the covers of this work. Let me list some of them.

One: The cost of the specialized tools required for the various projects throughout this book would and could run into the thousands of dollars. Many of these tools are so specialized that the average do it yourselfer, unlike a professional plumber, may use them only once in a life time. These are expensive tools!

Two: I counted the faucets in our current home. We have a grand total of 18. I counted the toilets. We have a total of four. I counted showers. We have a total of four. I examined all of these fixtures, all different, and then compared them to the ones shown in this work. I did not find one, no, not one in my home that bore anything but a slight resemblance to what is featured in this book.

Three: I examined the pictures (the step by step pictures) in this book. All are taken under ideal and pristine conditions; on tables, in new unfinished homes, in workshops. Everything was clean and neat and there was plenty of work space in all illustrations. Folks, life is not like that. Plumbing, by nature, is located in small, cramped and really dirty places. You have to be part contortionist to get to most of it. I am old and cannot bend and twist all that much, and while I am not particularly afraid of spiders and such creepy critters, I do not go out of my way to consort with them and lay amongst them.

Four: I spend time in hardware stores caressing fondling different tools and parts. There are thousands of different parts and systems to choose from for just about anything you want to fix. These parts evolve and change year by year. This book, like most of its ilk, was pretty much outdated before the ink dried on it.

Five: As so well pointed out by another reviewer here, there is some extremely important information omitted. This reviewer has used the example of galvanic corrosion and the author's complete lack of addressing this problem and phenomena. When you deal with plumbing, you are handling quite a number of different materials; metals, plastics, chemicals, etc. Not all of these are compatible...even I know that! Not knowing or being told what goes with what can cause complete disaster and can be extremely expensive to correct. If this important information was omitted (and it was), then you have to ask yourself "what more is missing?"

Six: Unless you are somewhat familiar with it, the technical jargon used in this work is not unlike the study of Greek.

Seven: Very little in this book addresses the process of removing the old before the new is installed. This removal process is often times just as difficult as installing new stuff. Every tried to work with corroded fixtures that have been in place 30, 40, 50 years and more? Good luck!

Unlike me, you may find this work quite helpful. I would strongly suggest though that you check this thing out from the library before you plunk you hard earned dollar down. If you like it and find it useful, then there is plenty of time to order a copy later. I am giving this one two stars simply because a tremendous amount of work went into the writing and design. There were a few useful tidbits here and there so it was not a complete loss.

2Book lacking in how to do it details!  Apr 22, 2012 By Annoymous
I just got done with this self instuctional book on plumbing and it left me still wonder how to do stuff! It does not give you step by step instructions but skips alot in between and there were not too many pictures either to illustrate how to do stuff. Plus, slidebar mounted handshower installations were not in the book. It seems to be cheaply put together except for the cover which was first rate. The book uses illustrations in outline format that left one wondering why they use this method instead of photos. I would not recommend this book to learn how to do a project! The title should of be change to "Plumbing Incomplete"
