Included is state-of-the-art information on fundamental material properties and mechanisms affecting the performance of asphalt concrete, new rheological testing and analysis techniques, constitutive models, and performance prediction methodologies for asphalt concrete and asphalt pavements. Emphasis is placed on the modeling of asphalt mixes for specific geographic/climatic requirements. In light of America's crumbling infrastructure and our heavy usage of asphalt as a paving material, this timely reference is essential for the development of more-durable and cost-effective asphalt materials for both new construction and rehabilitation. Harness the Latest Breakthroughs in Asphalt Concrete Technology: • Asphalt Rheology • Constitutive Models • Stiffness Characterization • Models for Low-Temperature Cracking • Models for Fatigue Cracking and Moisture Damage • Models for Rutting and Aging | | | |

Modeling of Asphalt Concrete by Y. R. Kim Dec 10, 2010
By syz My area is asphalt concrete modeling and here is my review. I was thinking to buy this for sometime and I finally bought it. This is a book written by many authors and edited by Y. R. Kim. This is a good book. It covers the recent advances of the modeling of asphalt concrete and authors have done a good job of collecting most of the papers. Anyone doing research in asphalt concrete should have this book for references. However there are several issues that you need to be aware of.
Pg-66: "Asphalt concrete stiffness is a material property." Do they mean modulus? This is wrong! They are not the same! Stiffness is a structural property whereas modulus is a material property. Two different structures of same material (modulus) can have different stiffness. Even an undergraduate knows this. I have seen this tendency in asphalt community which should be corrected. The whole of chapter 3 is devoted to stiffness where they really mean modulus. There is a lack of discussion of various viscoelastic models for asphalt concrete. A brief introduction to viscoelasticity should have been provided. Calculation of Prony series coefficients (pg-147) are surely never done with relaxation modulus data, but with the storage modulus data, therefore, Eq. 6-19 and 6-20 are useless. No mention of phase angle master curve fittings, which is a challenge. Ch-9 talks about the DBN law. This is completely bogus. Di Benedetto and Neifar (DBN) have developed this so called "law" and provided it a name with their own. What they are actually talking about is the Havriliak-Niegami (H-N) equation in a modified form (Eq. 9-5) which is well known among polymer community. Fig 9-8 complex plot shows the typical H-N function fitting. I wonder if they had published their papers in science journals (e.g. Springer journals) instead of pavement materials journal they would have been able to do this. They have not provided the physical meanings of the parameters which is well described by H-N in their 1966 and 1967 papers. It must also be mentioned that not all types of mixes show this kind of behavior. It looks like DBN never heard of this before.
Overall, good book, lots of references, whether they are useful or not is up to your judgment. One should keep in mind that lot of the modeling techniques discussed are currently at the developing stage. Do not take it as the bible of asphalt concrete modeling; there are lots of self propaganda in this book which you should be aware of. The only useful and accurate chapters I found are Ch-7 and Ch-12.
Very nice compilation! May 08, 2009
By Luiz G. R. Mello Excellent work! This book should be read by all pavement engineers who work with asphaltic materials. Present recent developments in all fields.
