Usually ships in 1 business days | | | | | | This super-handy manual, first published in 1973, has received a major upgrade. Seventeen chapters' worth of fixer-upper opportunities are enhanced with more than 3,000 photos and illustrations that would look equally at home in an upscale home decorating catalogue. The first few chapters cover hand and power tools, fasteners and adhesives, and are enough to incite hardware envy among even dwellers of tiny apartments. There is strange beauty in the cutaway views of five different hollow-wall fasteners and the machinations of nine types of pliers. But homeowners are, of course, the real target audience, and an all-new section on Landscaping reflects this with entries on fences, water gardens and retaining walls. The plumbing section offers a mega-view of wastewater-treatment systems as well as a micro-exploration of unclogging a toilet. Another new section, Storage Projects, is full of cabinets and shelves that either "Swing-out" or "Fold-away." New technologies are generally overlooked in favor of meat-and-potatoes projects. For instance, a home satellite dish is pictured but not indexed or dwelled upon, while carpeting is charted, graphed and deconstructed in the extreme. Intriguing sidebars on wood refinishers (the fastest drying versus the safest), the financial benefits of renting specialty tools for a large drywall project and other subjects round out this must-have guide. Nice book Jul 27, 2010 its a nice well-rounded general know-how-to book. It doesn't get too deep into any one particular project, yet the info is good. Some of the graphics look a bit dated despite the claim of it being recently revised. I suppose all is well though, how much does plumbing change over the years? Hammering a nail is still hammering a nail.
i've enjoyed this book and plan on using it as a main point of reference for future household projects.

Damaged goods Jul 19, 2010 The Reader's Digest Complete Do It Yourself Manual arrived in a damaged package and all four corners of the book were badly crushed. Very disappointed.

Fantastic Resource May 19, 2010 Grew up with the original 70's edition in my house that belonged to my dad. He was telling me that this book probably saved him thousands of dollars. Knowing he isn't much of a handyman, and that his patience with following instructions is very limited, I figured this book must be pretty straightforward. The updated edition isn't any different.
As a first-time homebuyer, I felt this would be an invaluable guide for all of my future projects. Highly recommended.
Man this was handy! Feb 03, 2010 I consider myself lucky to own this guide. The guide is straight forward and to the point, focusing not only on the steps to take, but also the precautions and pitfalls of projects. Even if you don't know a thing about home improvement this guide can walk you through many different situations step by step. It also features a good introduction to Do-It-Yourself(D-I-Y), the tools, the mentality, and the safety.
The only problem I had with this guide, is that it made some projects look easier then they actually are (sort of like home improvement shows on the television).
I would recommend this guide to anyone who is thinking about home improvement but isn't sure whether to hire a contractor or attempt to D-I-Y. I would also recommend this guide to people who like using the internet to learn D-I-Y projects as published printings tend to be more reliable then internet "hearsay".
Do It Yourself! Jan 30, 2010 I refer to this book all the time. It actually helped me build my house and now it helps with maintenance and improvements. The instructions are clear, easy to understand, even for an inexperienced do-it-yourselfer.
